WHAT IS NAFTA? NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) is a multi-country agreement establishing a free trade zone (no taxes on imports) in North America. This agreement was signed in 1992 and put into effect in 1994 by Canada, Mexico and the United States. The connection to the topic of Interdependence is established with the fact that these countries rely on each other for the production and distribution of various goods and services. The goal of NAFTA is to create new employment opportunities within the borders of these three countries for their inhabitants, particularly in Mexico. The involved industries are agriculture, automobile and textile manufacturing, telecommunications, financial services, energy, and trucking. This concept has just been extended to the United States and Central America in CAFTA.
